Tau Omega Mu International, in partnership with Memphis Outreach, embarks on a compassionate and vital medical mission to Samar and Leyte in the Philippines.

These two provinces were profoundly affected by recent natural disasters and this mission aims to address the critical healthcare needs of underserved communities in the region, which had been severely impacted by these events.

Samar and Leyte had been grappling with the devastating aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013 and a series of subsequent natural disasters. These catastrophic events had disrupted local healthcare infrastructure and left thousands of residents without access to basic medical services. The population, already vulnerable due to poverty and limited healthcare resources, faced significant health challenges, including injuries, infections, and chronic illnesses.

The primary goal of the medical mission is to provide immediate medical relief to those affected by the disasters and to offer sustainable healthcare solutions for the long term. The specific objectives include:

  • Basic Healthcare Services: The team provided essential healthcare services, such as general check-ups, vaccinations, and screenings, to identify and treat common illnesses and conditions prevalent in the area.
  • Medication and Supplies: The mission ensured the distribution of medications, medical supplies, and hygiene kits to help prevent the spread of diseases and improve overall health in these vulnerable communities.
  • Optometry Consultations and Free Eyeglasses: Residents requiring vision correction will have access to eye examinations and free eyeglasses.
  • Health Education: Local residents were educated about preventive healthcare practices, hygiene, and nutrition to empower them to take better care of their health in the future.

Transportation and Lodging
The medical and dental mission will be conducted as a caravan where a team of doctors and volunteers will be traveling from Catbalogan, Samar to Alangalang and Baybay, Leyte, while the surgical mission will be happening simultaneously in Calbayog, Samar on Days 1 to 3. Transportation from the Tacloban airport to the team’s first stop and between municipalities will be arranged and provided by TOM International. Accommodations will also be arranged and provided by TOM International.
